Men Looking at Slag Refining

The images in this work appropriate photographs from a 1960s textbook about the process of slag refining. Detached from their context, colourfully manipulated and collaged into a 21st century spectacle, these men are still looking at slag refining.
In electro-slag refining, a consumable electrode of primary metal is melted through a resistance-heated slag bath, molten droplets falling through the liquid slag to re-solidify on a cooled baseplate. Refinement, to a purer metal, is achieved by choosing a slag that promotes the desired chemical reaction.
The work is published as a hand-bound booklet, obtainable by e-mailing standickinson@yahoo.co.uk.
